Extensions & Refurbishment, Iver

Contemporary additions to Neo-Georgian Villa:

This was a huge venture, not just for our clients themselves but also for their children and parents. They bought a reasonably attractive Neo-Georgian house that was in a very poor condition with the intention of:
  • Massively enlarging it – to make it big enough for them all;
  • Changing the internal layouts – to make it suit their lifestyle(s!); and
  • Making the extensions visually modern and exciting to contrast with the existing building.

Project challenges?

Having so many different people involved and interested in the design process means it takes a lot more effort than normal to make sure all their needs have been met and their worries have addressed. This was definitely the case with this project but the key for dealing with this was listening carefully to what they said (and what they didn’t!) and very patiently working through all the necessary options, alternatives and questions until they were all happy with what we were proposing.

The real difficulty came when the Local Authority (LA) would not accept the beautiful and exciting modern designs, indicating that the proposals should look more like the existing house. This is not uncommon, which is why we’d suggested to S & R that we should submit some initial concept designs for pre-application advice, so as to avoid wasting time and money finding this out at a much later stage.

Never-the-less, we worked with the LA, and although the designs weren’t quite as modern as S & F had originally wanted, they were still very pleased and still managed to get the accommodation that they needed for everyone.

Client feedback:

"Our new house is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!

Francko and I wanted something really different and exciting and had seen lots of ideas watching Grand Designs and other programs like that and we knew we needed more space but there was no way we could have imagined everything that Artichoke did and how they put it all together into one beautiful house for us all.
