Mentoring at Artichoke
Artichoke as a team is made up of a diverse range of characters, all of whom have different experiences, qualifications and educational paths that got us to where we are now.
Through all of our careers we have been given time by some amazing mentors who have helped to improve our skills, instil good habits and learn more about what it takes to be a good designer of buildings, as well as being a good, boss, employee and workmate.
Artichoke prides itself in trying to give back to the architectural education system as much as we can, from the first buds of an interest in architecture at school to providing a place for graduate students to undertake their work placements. We do this by giving talks at school careers evenings explaining what its like to be an architect and how you become one. We host secondary school work experience students in the office either directly or via established school systems including ones from local international schools, partaking in the RIBA’s Student mentoring system where we spend 5 days over a year with a final year degree student. We also have post graduate year out students in the office.
The year our students have been so successful for us, including Sam (our current Part I student), that we now are looking to take on both a Part I and a Part II student from August this year.
Now this enthusiasm for having students work with us is not just about what we can offer them but also what they bring to the office. We believe we learn a lot about what we do by explaining to others and their young enquiring minds tests us on a daily basis both technically and creatively – both about what we do and what we don’t.
Most importantly they are a breath of fresh air and bring a passion for modern design into the office whilst suggesting some very random music for the office playlist!
