It seems like very old news that girls and women can do anything (including becoming Architects) as well or better than boys & men, it’s just such a shame that for whatever reason they don’t want to, or perhaps don’t believe that they can or should (even worse and of course NOT true!).
It’s truly a loss.
Other than of course the simple fact that everyone really should be treated equally, there are significant benefits of diversity (at @Artichoke or any company) is that, as a team, we have a greater breadth of thought, empathy and understanding, all of which are a massive help, given that we work with so many different people, from different sexes, races, religions, nationalities (etc).
I’m delighted to say that not only do we have the creative, experienced and skilled Esther (follow the link & scroll down) working with us (albeit currently on maternity leave but we’re looking forward to having her back soon!), we also had the bright, enthusiastic and talented Ella with us for work experience last year – follow the link and see our blog about her.
I suspect we’re all responsible in some way (unconsciously) by propagating our own, marketing and media’s stereotypes, leading young women and girls to believe that any male dominated industry is not for them. Anecdotally, the number of female architects is rising year by year but until it’s a level playing field, we all need to do much, much more. This includes perhaps challenging ourselves not to default to dressing our baby girls in pink rather than a high vis vest and buying them dolls rather than a lump hammer!
As a husband, parent & business owner I’m committed to support #diversity and #equality by focusing on what people have to offer above all else.
