Why Artichoke?
A question lots of people ask when we meet them for the first time.

A question lots of people ask when we meet them for the first time and they’re considering trusting us with their project – up there with what we do, how do we do it, how much will it cost etc etc!!
Obviously when I was made redundant in 2008, and decided that was the sign to start my own practice - as well as clients, I needed a name!
Really, I have to thank a chap called Scott Black, with whom I used to work as it was him that lead me to it; he used to say things like “Have you chased the artichokes?” when we were working with external architects on projects.
Although Scott planted the seed and it popped into my head straight away, I needed to test it, as I would with any design project. The more I thought about it – the better and more suitable it became.
- It’s
different
&
PLayFuL – probably what appealed to me the most. This stands for a general way of life and approach to find solutions to problems – be creative, offer unexpected alternatives. We had a go at reimagining our
logo (image 3) for the Bauhaus Centenary
– see our post Play explore make mistakes it's okay. - It begins with an A – in the olden days when people looked in big yellow books for their services, which were in alphabetical order – it was helpful to be near the top to be seen more.
- It’s green – although it was over 15 years ago, we were already becoming aware that we needed to have a lot more consideration for our environment.
- It’s an attractive logo - 1. although I suppose you can turn anything into a logo, when I started looking at images (image 1), I was immediately taken by it. Each grows and forms with the same process and (like every project) ends up beautiful and unique ;o)
- It’s HARD WORK to prepare (but worth it) – to get the best out of anything takes effort, often the greater the challenge, the greater the effort needed but the more rewarding the end result.
- It’s err….um…. M E M O R A B L E ! – like the service, the designs and the projects, we’ve been told that our logo (image 2) sticks in people's minds.
Quite a lot of that thought process happened in fractions of a second and some came to me over time but as the relevance & meaning just kept growing and growing – we stuck with the logo. Maybe one day it will bloom as it’s actually not a vegetable but a bud for much of its life before it finally flourishes into a beautiful purple flower (image 4).
Which of these appeals to you the most or can you think of another aspect of the artichoke that makes it relevant to what we do?
