New Meets Old
You may be noticing a theme – well, that’s because it’s something that really excites us as it’s such a challenge with such rewards – when you get it right!
We’ve been working on a very modestly scaled facelift to a gob-smackingly-beautiful old Coach House in a conservation area in Windsor, attached to a listed building–in the form of two existing single storey extensions.
There is nothing wrong (per-se) with the existing extensions; they match the white painted brickwork and provide additional space. However, they do not come anywhere near continuing the charm & character of the Coach house, nor do they really continue the flow or integrate with it.
As is always the case when we have a great client – one who embraces the process and is happy to allow us plenty of time to explore ideas – time after time, the results are incredible and worth every penny and minute we put into them!
Initially we were asked to start with something very bold and modern, which was a proposal (after many discarded iterations!) that the client fell in love with. But, one which they then felt might be pushing the ‘contrast’ and the cost a little too far for their comfort. We then paired the design (options) right back (many more discarded iterations!) and reached a solution which they now feel balances all of their priorities.
We’ve put together a handful of options for you to see (there isn’t space or time to show every part of the design evolution!) We have a firm favourite, and we’re sure you will too!
We are still in the relatively early stages of the whole architectural process. But, we’re very excited to see this project progress and get into the nitty-gritty of the detailed (constructional) designs, so that we can make them as well thought through and beautiful as the concept design.
We love a challenge – so are still debating the curveball the client gave us, which was to include references to the famous celebrities that once partied in the house. Details to follow…
